A Simple Guide to Looking After Leather Shoes
Ten minutes of care every few weeks keeps leather shoes looking good for years.

What you need
- A horsehair brush
- A soft cotton cloth
- Neutral or matching cream polish
- Cedar shoe trees
The routine
1. Brush
Remove dust and dry dirt with a firm brush after every few wears. Dirt left on the surface works its way into the creases.
2. Condition
Work a small amount of cream into the leather with a cloth, using small circles. Let it dry for ten minutes.
3. Buff
Brush again with quick, light strokes until the leather has an even shine.
Between wears
Give shoes a full day to dry before wearing them again, and keep shoe trees in them. This one habit does more for their shape than any polish.
| How often | What to do |
|---|
| After each wear | Shoe trees in, quick wipe |
| Every 2–3 weeks | Brush, condition, buff |
| Twice a year | Check soles and heels |
